Phishing

“Phishing” (pronounced “fishing”) is when criminals use e-mail to try to lure you to fake websites, where you’re asked to disclose confidential financial and personal information, like passwords, credit card account numbers or Social Security Numbers.

The most common type of phish is an e-mail threatening some dire consequences if you do not immediately log in and take action.

You should never respond or reply to e-mail that:

  • Requires you to enter personal information directly into the e-mail or submit that information some other way.
  • Threatens to close or suspend your account if you do not take immediate action by providing personal information.
  • Solicits your participation in a survey where you are asked to enter personal information.
  • States that your account has been compromised or that there has been third-party activity on your account and requests you to enter or confirm your account information.
  • States that there are unauthorized charges on your account and requests your account information.
  • Asks you to enter your User ID, Password or account numbers into an e-mail or non-secure webpage.
  • Asks you to confirm, verify, or refresh your account, credit card, or billing information.

If you’ve received or responded to a suspicious e-mail come into the bank or contact us immediately during normal business hours.

The Future

Ultimately, privacy is a partnership.  You too can take steps to secure your personal information by following these tips developed by the American Bankers Association:
  • Never give out Social Security number or personal credit information over the phone unless you initiate the call.
  • Tear up and shred receipts, bank statements and unused credit card offers.
  • Keep track of your mail.  If a statement, check or bill is missing, someone may have changed your billing address.  Don’t mail bills from your own mailbox.  Drop them in a post box or at the post office.
  • Review your credit report annually, and report and correct mistakes.
  • Make sure you do business with reputable companies, especially on the Internet.
  • Keep your browser’s padlock or key icon active when doing business online.
  • Don’t open e-mail from unknown sources.
  • Use virus detection software.
  • Protect your PINS and passwords.  Change them often.
  • Use a combination of letters and numbers.
  • Report any suspected fraud to us immediately, and notify the fraud divisions of the three major credit bureaus:  TransUnion (800) 916-8800; Experian (800) 301-7195 and Equifax (800) 525-6285.
